Abstract

The present article focuses onto certain important features of the historical development of Bulgarian painting at a time which marked the boundary between two epochs that played a pivotal role in our nation’s evolvement. The significant transformations that painting in general and Christian art in particular (mural and icon painting) underwent in result of the profound social, political, economic and cultural changes, taking place in our country after 1878, are representative both of processes within the development of fine arts, as well as of the public perceptions of the new directions and trends that emerged within fine arts.

It is only natural that these changes occur in relation to the strongly pronounced and determined re-orientation of Bulgaria towards the model set by the developed European countries. This shift is easy to comprehend from a socio-psychological and cultural point of view and, in addition, it is inevitable from the perspective of historical development.
