Abstract

Dysphagia is a disorder that has recently been included in the education of speech and language therapy students in our country. Practicing speech therapists also have little knowledge and skills in this field. The present article discusses the requirements for clinical competencies of speech and language therapists, listed in a number of literature sources and guidelines of professional organizations abroad. Specific methods for assessment and treatment are presented that need to be translated into particular knowledge and skills and implemented in dysphagia treatment. The summary is aimed at the fact that in Bulgaria the criteria for acquiring professional competencies for working with chewing and swallowing disorders should be clearly defined.
