Abstract

In preschool, understanding prepositions plays an extremely important role in children's language development. During this period, they prepare to enter the learning environment and acquire more complex language structures. Research on language acquisition and grammar is important for accurate diagnosis in speech therapy practice. The diagnostic process is concerned with clarity about the level of mastery of different aspects of language development of children in the norm. The present article focuses on two tests to assess the decoding of prepositional relations, part of a more detailed study of the grammatical functioning of 5–7-year-old children. The tests aim to assess the understanding of prepositions and the ability to use them correctly. The results of the tests show that children from the 6–7-year-old group cope better with the tasks. The analysis of the primary and statistical data shows the formation of subgroups – "weak" and "strong", which shows a different degree of mastery of understanding and the correct use of prepositions in children with typical language development from 5–7 years of age.
